This burger was inspired by the legendary Los Angeles Fat Burger on Western Avenue. I just reworked it by adding onions, fresh garlic, and bell peppers to the meat. It’s just as good as the original, and you’ll still need a bib and plenty of napkins. This burger goes well with homemade fries and a bottle of Pineapple Crush Soda.
Serves 4
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
2 pounds ground beef
½ yellow onion, peeled and finely diced
½ green bell pepper, washed, seeded, and
finely diced
3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
1/3 cup A-1 steak sauce
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
4 slices Cheddar cheese
Yellow mustard to taste
4 medium to large hamburger buns
Mayonnaise to taste
1 1/3 cups Spicy Turkey Chili, warm
2 large tomatoes, washed and sliced
1 large dill pickle, thinly sliced
¼ head iceberg lettuce, washed and leaves separated
WHAT TO DO
1. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Place the ground beef, onion, bell pepper, garlic, and steak sauce in a large bowl. Gently mix the ingredients together, seasoning the meat mixture with salt and pepper.
2. On a piece of plastic wrap, shape the burger meat into patties. Pack them tightly with your hands to keep them from coming apart while cooking.
3. Lightly season the burgers on both sides with salt and pepper. Place the burgers in the skillet over medium heat and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Flip the burgers and continue to cook 3 to 4 minutes on the other side or to desired doneness. Top each burger with 1 slice of cheese and continue to cook until the cheese has melted.
4. Spread mustard on the bottom of each bun and mayonnaise on the top. Place the buns on a platter and a burger on the bottom of each bun. Spoon chili on top of the burgers and top with tomatoes, pickle, and lettuce. Cover with the top half of the bun. Serve immediately.
